Our Mission...

The National Guard Association of Washington was incorporated in 1891 as a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the welfare and interests of the National Guard. Today, well over a century later, the NGAW has the same mission. The organization's primary focus continues to be petitioning Congress for the resources needed to obtain better equipment, standardized training and, ultimately, a more combat ready force.

We Are Your Voice...

Without your membership, our voice is diminished at both the State and National level. We urgently need your help and support.

Please join the National Guard Associations and keep our Guard strong!

Write to Congress

"NGAUS Legislative Action Center Write to Congress feature is the best tool for contacting your elected officials via email. Help NGAUS meet its goal of 200,000 emails to Congress in 2012! Your voice does make a difference, so take time to contact your representatives often and encourage your friends and family to do the same.  With your influence, we can strengthen the National Guard message and keep our voice strong on the Hill!"  Write to Congress

Members Respond in Record Numbers in 2011

The membership of NGAUS has responded to Legislative Alerts in record numbers this year as the association was pushing for the National Guard Bureau chief's inclusion on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In 2011, 115,565 messages from NGAUS members had rolled into congressional offices.  This tops the total for last year, which was 108,961.  The 2011 figure includes 10,510 people who responded for the first time this year.

"The record-setting level of Write to Congress memos is a clear indication that an ever-increasing number of our members have come to realize that their voice in Congress does make a difference," said Richard Green, the NGAUS legislative director.

The numbers reflect a continuing trend.  In recent years, responses have been steadily climbing.  As recently as 2005, the number was below 10,000.  It jumped from 33,179 in 2008 to 91,035 in 2009 and topped 100,000 for the first time last year.

Georgia and Tennessee lead among the states with the most responses. All state totals are available at www.ngaus.org/writetocongress.

Although Guard empowerment has been the biggest issue on the NGAUS agenda, members responded most often to the issue of changing the legal definition of veteran.  The multiple alerts on this topic generated 26,059 responses.  Empowerment attracted 14,608 responses.  It, too, was the subject of multiple alerts, as was space-available travel for Guard members and retirees, which prompted 14,520 responses.

Although only one alert was distributed concerning the Defense Business Board's suggestion that military retirement pay be changed, it attracted 10,329 responses.
